Eating Disorders do not discriminate. I have seen eating disorders affect men and women, adults and children of all different ethnicities. Sadly, eating disorders are still associated with the stigma that the person struggling can “just start eating again” or “stop purging because it is hurting the family.” This is absolutely not the case.
Recovery from an eating disorder is possible, however, it is a lot of work. Much of the time it is hard for the person struggling to take the first step in their recovery because of the guilt and shame associated with their eating disorder. Acknowledging that the eating disorder is interfering with your happiness is the first step. Establishing a therapeutic relationship with a therapist will hopefully be your next step.
